BBQ Saftey and Propane Tanks

BBQ Saftey and Propane Tanks

Here is a link (BBQ Safety (tssa.org)) to their website.

From the information provided within the link you will see that the TSSA does not allow storage of propane cylinders inside any structure and provides additional safety measures to follow.

From a Fire Prevention perspective we would recommend the use of an electric style BBQ on balconies.  If your condo board agreement does allow for the use of propane BBQ’s on balconies (please refer to your condominium Declaration, ByLaws and Rules) then below are some suggested safety measures that should be followed.

Cooking equipment is always supervised and never left unattended

  • Cooking equipment is properly cleaned and maintained
  • When not in use device remains shut off
  • Kept away from flammable/combustible items
  • Kept away from building openings doors/windows or air intakes.  This helps minimize the chance of Carbon Monoxide entering the building
  • Cooking equipment kept on level flat surfaces
  • Propane cylinders kept upright and secure
  • Propane used/stored/handled in accordance with the TSSA regulations
