Silverfish

Silverfish - a nuisance insect

Silverfish are one of the most common pests found indoors—especially during the fall. Since these pests prefer relatively warm and humid environments, temperature drops in autumn will make silverfish more evident.

Silverfish are not directly harmful to humans. These small insects do not bite or spread disease.

Controlling silverfish involves a combination of prevention, elimination, and maintenance. Here are some effective strategies:

Prevention

  1. Seal Cracks and Crevices: Inspect your home for gaps in walls, windows, and doors. Seal these areas to prevent silverfish from entering.
  2. Reduce Humidity: Silverfish thrive in damp environments. Use dehumidifiers and ensure proper ventilation in basements and bathrooms.
  3. Declutter: Keep areas like basements, attics, and storage spaces free of unnecessary items. Silverfish love hiding in paper, cardboard, and clutter.
  4. Proper Storage: Store food in airtight containers and keep dry goods in sealed plastic or glass containers.
  5. Regular Vacuuming: Vacuuming floors and furniture regularly, paying special attention to hidden areas, will remove additional food sources and insect egg masses

Elimination

  • Boric Acid: Sprinkle boric acid in areas where you’ve seen silverfish. It’s effective but should be used with caution if you have pets or small children.
  • Diatomaceous Earth: This natural powder can be spread in areas where silverfish are likely to travel. It dehydrates and kills them.
  • Insecticides: Consider using a residual insecticide labeled for silverfish control. Follow instructions carefully.
